How can I publish test content to the newsroom without it being visible?

If you need to publish test articles, either to test a newsroom module or an external component, this can be done without them being visible on your newsroom homepage where visitors can see it.

You can take the following steps to make your test articles invisible.

  1. Change the publication date to a date in the past, so the article isn't visible in carousel, headlines or featured release modules.
  2. Change the SEO settings of the article to 'noindex, nofollow' to avoid the article from being indexed by search engines.
  3. Hide the article(s) from the sitemap, archive pages, the search function. In some situations you may want to hide the article from the newsroom itself and the RSS feeds too.

If you want to test a Presspage module, you can use a custom page for this, that isn't being linked to anywhere on the newsroom.

If you want to test an external component that pulls in an RSS feed, you could create multiple test articles and give them all the same tag, for example 'testing'. You can then create a tagfeed with this specific tag. In that case, you'll need to keep the 'RSS feed' setting in the publication settings enabled.

I share my article on social media but the preview image doesn't show up

When you share your article URL on social media, these social networks use meta tags to generate a preview 'card'. Such a card will grab the title and description as well as the featured image to generate a link with a preview of your content.

For example, on X such a card may look like this:

Sometimes it happens that you share a link on social media, only to realise that the title, description or featured image needs to be changed.

So you change it - and then you notice that the change is not visible in the generated preview card.

What happened is that the social network has cached the old preview card. Fortunately it's possible to force these social networks to clear their cache and update the preview card data. This can be done at the following links:

This will clear the cache and you'll see a preview of the new card.

The X card validator has been discontinued, but you can see a preview at opengraph.xyz. However, X offers no option to clear their cache this way.

When will the Social message be posted?

  • If the article is scheduled to a date in the future, the Social message will be posted on that selected date and time to the selected Social channel.
  • If the article is already published, the Social message will be posted immediately to the selected Social channel.
  • If the article is currently unpublished, the Social message will not be posted until the article is published.

When a Social message is posted, it cannot be edited or removed anymore. Posted messages will show a 'checkmark' icon.

Articles in non-Latin alphabets

If you have an article containing a slug in a non-Latin alphabet, such as Arabic, this may cause problems with including the article URL in a tweet. There are two options to resolve this issue:

  1. Use an English slug instead
  2. Use a URL shortener, such as bit.ly. For this to work, you'll need a bit.ly account. They have a free plan that allows you to shorten 5 URLs per month.
