During the onboarding process for Presspage Mail, we'll ask you to pick a subdomain to set up Presspage Mail. If you also use a subdomain for the Newsroom itself, please note that you'll need to pick a different subdomain in that case.
This subdomain is required by our vendor to:
- track opens, clicks and unsubscribes, which we show in the Statistics section
- verify ownership of the domain
- help establish a positive sender reputation, which improves deliverability
Theoretically, this can also be done on the main domain, but we strongly advise against this.
The main reason is that using a subdomain is less risky.
Even if the mails you send out have nothing to do with spam, sending out bulk email campaigns always carry the risk of one or more people marking your mail as spam - even if it actually isn't. The last thing you want is to get your main domain blacklisted by a major internet service provider or by a well known blacklist such as Spamhaus or Spamcop.
Mistakes happen, but we know from experience that it's easier to get on a blacklist than to get removed from one.
Using a subdomain mitigates the risk and makes sure that even in the rare event that your subdomain would end up getting blacklisted, mails from your main domain, such as invoices, 'password reset' mails, internal mails and other types of mail, are not affected.
Another reason is that it helps you gain insight into your own mails and makes troubleshooting easier.
If you have deliverability issues for internal email addresses it's trivial to filter on just that specific subdomain instead of having to search through all mail.
Finally, it's important to note that even if you set up Presspage Mail on a subdomain, you can still use the main domain in your From-address. So if you decide to go with subdomain.example.com, you're not required to use something like press@subdomain.example.com as your From-address, you can still use press@example.com if that's what you prefer.
Once you have indicated your preferences for a specific subdomain to your Implementation Manager during onboarding, we will provide you with instructions to set up the necessary DNS records (such as SPF and DKIM) to start using Presspage Mail.
It's not possible to use the same subdomain for your newsroom and Presspage Mail at the same time. A newsroom subdomain integration requires a CNAME record, which forbids a second DNS entry for the same hostname.
