Set up a Mail subdomain

When setting up Mail, you’ll be asked to choose a subdomain. If your newsroom also uses a subdomain, make sure to select a different one.

Why a subdomain is required

Our email vendor requires a subdomain to:

  • Track opens, clicks, and unsubscribes (shown in the Statistics section).
  • Verify domain ownership.
  • Build and protect your sender reputation, which improves deliverability.

Although technically possible on the main domain, we strongly recommend using a subdomain.

Benefits of Using a Subdomain

1. Reduce Risk to Your Main Domain

Bulk email campaigns always carry the chance of being flagged as spam. If this happens on your main domain, you risk being blacklisted by major ISPs or services like Spamhaus.
Using a subdomain isolates this risk, ensuring critical emails (invoices, password resets, internal mail) sent from your main domain are unaffected.

2. Easier Troubleshooting

With a dedicated subdomain, deliverability issues are easier to track. You can quickly filter by that subdomain without searching through all email traffic.

3. Flexible From-address

Even with a subdomain setup, you can still use your main domain in the From-address.
For example, if you configure subdomain.example.com, you can still send emails as press@example.com.

Important Notes

You cannot use the same subdomain for both your newsroom and Presspage Mail. A newsroom subdomain requires a CNAME record, which blocks adding additional DNS entries.

After choosing your subdomain during onboarding, Support will share the DNS setup instructions (such as SPF and DKIM).
